I am buying a mac and I am a student so it is a little pricey. I could get the exact same laptop except "refurbished" for $300.00 less. Should I take the risk? What is so bad about refurbished? Will I experience any problems or cause me any trouble that the new laptop would not cause? If it breaks is it covered by apple?
As others have said, there's generally no risk with buying hardware from the Apple refurb store - they come with the full 12 month warranty from Apple, and are generally machines returned as broken and then fixed, or occasionally last gen hardware when a new model comes out.
Generally speaking, the only thing you'll notice is that you don't get the proper box, although Apple do warn that occasionally there may be some physical defect (such as markings etc), or you might not get the same software as considered standard - what you're getting is generally listed on a product by product basis however, so just make sure you check to make sure it's what you want.
I've had several machines from the refurb store with pretty much no problem - one laptop did come with the bluetooth not working, which I suspect was the problem with it in the first place, but a quick call to Apple and they collected, repaired and sent it back to be within 3 days. All other purchases from there have been flawless, and in fact a friend of mine bought a Macbook Pro from there a few years ago and got a much better spec'd machine that he was expecting, so after the discount it turned out to be a fantastic purchase!
Basically, there's no risk involved and as long as you don't mind maybe not getting all the packaging you'd get from paying retail prices, so go for it!
